Credit card math

Credit card annual fee vs rewards

Calculate the break-even spend for a card and compare net value after annual fees, reward caps and redemption friction.

Open the rewards calculator

A card is worth its fee when the value of rewards and benefits you actually use exceeds the annual cost. Compare net value, not the issuer’s maximum possible reward rate.

How to use this guide

  1. 1Estimate normal eligible spend without stretching your budget.
  2. 2Add realistic reward and benefit value, then subtract recurring fees.
  3. 3Keep the card only if the net value remains positive after conservative assumptions.

Find the break-even spend

Divide the annual fee by the effective reward rate, then adjust for caps, exclusions and the fee waiver threshold. Use the fee including taxes and compare it with the rewards from spending you already expect to make.

Value benefits conservatively

Count lounge visits, vouchers and insurance only when you would otherwise pay for or use them. A benefit you never use has a practical value of zero, even if its advertised value is high.

Include redemption value

Points may have different values across travel, vouchers, statement credit and other redemption options. Use the redemption route you actually choose, not the issuer’s best-case value.

Model caps and exclusions

A reward rate can apply only to selected categories or up to a monthly limit. Split your spending into eligible and ineligible amounts before estimating annual rewards.

Account for renewal decisions

A joining benefit may make the first year attractive while the renewal fee makes later years uneconomic. Compare the recurring value separately from one-time bonuses.

Avoid manufactured spending

A higher reward total is not useful if it requires spending more than your normal budget or creates interest charges. Pay every statement in full and never borrow to earn points.

Common questions

What to check before deciding

What is the basic break-even formula?

As a first estimate, divide the annual fee by the effective reward rate. Then refine it for caps, exclusions, taxes, redemption value and fee waivers.

Should joining bonuses be included?

Include them separately as a one-time first-year benefit. Do not use a joining bonus to justify a card whose recurring value is negative.

What is a conservative benefits value?

Use the amount you would otherwise spend to buy the benefit, and reduce it when usage is uncertain, restricted or inconvenient.
